When you talk of poker legends,
you really can not move on from
the subject without spending
a good amount of time discussing
Doyle Brunson. Brunson has been
playing poker for over 45 years,
and is one of the best all around
poker players there is. Cash
game, tournament, Stud, Hold
Em, it doesn't matter to Doyle,
he is always game. He has been
successful for longer than most
poker pro's have been alive.
Doyle grew up in Texas (hence
the name “Texas Dolly”)
and was a star athlete through
his teens. In high school he
excelled in baseball, track,
and most of all, basketball.
He was chosen to the all-state
team as one of the five best
players in the state, he also
was the state champion in the
mile. Doyle attended Hardin-Simmons
College and continued his basketball
career. Doyle had big dreams
of playing in the NBA, but those
dreams were ruined when Doyle
broke his knee in two places.
After the accident, he was never
the same and could not compete
at the high level he was used
to. Doyle finished school despite
not being able to play basketball,
and earned a masters degree
as well. Originally, Doyle wanted
to be a teacher, but he was
also playing poker, and winning.
He began earning much more at
the table than he had the ability
to earn working a “normal” job.
Doyle is one of the most successful
players of all time. He was
one of the initial inductee's
into the World Poker Tour Hall
of Fame, along side Gus Hansen
and James Garner. Doyle is the
owner of ten world series of
poker bracelets, which has him
tied for second place all time
behind Phil Hellmuth, who has
eleven. He played his way to
the final able of the first
ever WPT championship, and was
the winner of the Legends of
Poker event during WPT's season
three. Brunson holds bracelets
in a variety of games. He has
World Series of Poker wins in
Deuce to Seven, Seven Card Stud
Hi-Lo, Seven Card Stud, Mixed
Doubles, No Limit Hold Em, and
HORSE. Doyle was a back to back
winner of main events in 1076
and 1977. Both times Doyle was
able to win the tournament with
the exact same hand, 2-10. This
hand is now known as “Doyle
Brunson” Doyle also loves
to bet on things outside of
poker, evidenced by his $1 million dollar
bet that he would be able to
lose 100 pounds. He was able
to lose the weight, and win
the bet.
Doyle has written both Super
System, and Super System 2,
which are acclaimed poker books.
They feature a variety of game
advice from the absolute maste.
Doyle also has two children
who are succesful professional
poker players as well. Both
Todd and Pam Brunson have several
cashes in major events.
Above all else, Doyle respected
for his kid hearted character,
and friendly demeanor, however
don't ever mistake that for
weakness at the table. Doyle
also owns his own poker site,
which you can find him playing
on often, as they host one tournament
every week which features The
Texas Dolly. |
